EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Sir Max Aitken, M.P., in his military uniform during World War I. Born in Canada in 1879, Aitken, also known as William Maxwell Aitken and later as 1st Baron Beaverbrook, was a prominent Canadian-British businessman and newspaperman. By 1916, Aitken had already made a name for himself as a successful publisher and politician, but it was his role as an officer in the Canadian Expeditionary Force that brought him further acclaim. At the time this image was published in The Tatler, Aitken's book "Canada in Flanders" had recently been released. The book, which detailed his experiences with the Canadian forces in Europe, provided a unique perspective on the war from a Canadian point of view. Aitken's writing was not only informative but also deeply moving, and his journalistic skills were evident in the vivid descriptions of life on the front lines. Aitken's military service began in 1915 when he enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force as a private. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by 1916, he had been promoted to the rank of major. This photograph, taken during that year, shows Aitken in his military uniform, looking confident and determined. The caption beneath the image in The Tatler noted that "he has been in the thick of the fighting in France and Flanders, and has seen a good deal of hard work and hardships." Despite the challenges of war, Aitken continued to write and report, using his platform to bring the experiences of Canadian soldiers to a wider audience. His journalistic efforts during the war helped to shape public opinion and boost morale, earning him a reputation as a war correspondent and a champion of Canadian interests. After the war, Aitken returned to civilian life and continued to make a significant impact on British and Canadian politics and media. This photograph serves as a reminder of his important contributions during a pivotal moment in history.
