Sir Nowell Salmon VC: A Hero of the British Navy in the Late 19th Century This striking portrait captures the visage of Sir Nowell Salmon, a distinguished British naval commander who served during the late 19th century. Born in 1835, Salmon rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to become a respected and accomplished leader. He earned the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration in the British military, for his bravery and heroism during the Sudan Campaign of 1885. Salmon's naval career began in 1848 when he joined the Royal Navy as a boy sailor. He quickly proved himself to be an able seaman and was promoted to the rank of midshipman in 1854. Over the next several decades, Salmon continued to excel in his military duties, serving in various capacities on ships around the world. During the Sudan Campaign, Salmon distinguished himself during the Battle of Khartoum. He led a successful attack on a fortified Dervish position, despite being outnumbered and outgunned. Salmon's bravery and leadership saved the lives of many British soldiers and earned him the Victoria Cross. After the Sudan Campaign, Salmon continued to serve in the Royal Navy, holding various commands and rising to the rank of rear admiral. He retired from the navy in 1901, but remained active in military circles until his death in 1912.
