Sir Walter Raleigh: The Renaissance Man of Exploration and History Sir Walter Raleigh (1554-1618) was an English explorer, writer, and courtier, who played a significant role in the late Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. Born in Devonshire, England, Raleigh rose to prominence under Queen Elizabeth I, who granted him land in Virginia in 1584. Raleigh's life was not without controversy. He was imprisoned several times, most notably in the Tower of London from 1592 to 1596, and again from 1603 to 1616, on charges of treason. However, he was always a favorite of the queen, and she intervened on his behalf each time.
