He returned to Scotland in 1837 to establish a successful private practice in Edinburgh, becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1841. Fergusson's surgical prowess was legendary, and he was known for his innovative techniques and compassionate care. However, this portrait, taken around 1860, reveals another side of the surgeon: his vanity.
