EDITORS COMMENTS
Three Enchanting Ladies of Their Majesties Court: A Glimpse into the Past through John Lavery's Portraits This photograph features three of the many elegant sitters from John Lavery's painting, "Their Majesties Court," which is now lost to history. The three ladies, depicted here in black and white, are, from left, Miss Margaret Whigham (later Mrs. Charles Sweeny and then Duchess of Argyll), Lady Patricia Moore, and Miss Diane Chamberlain. Their refined beauty and impeccable court attire transport us back to the glamorous world of the 1930s. Lavery's painting, exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy in 1932, caused quite a stir with its intricate details and realistic portrayal of the social elite of the time. The painting showcased an impressive assembly of society's most prominent figures, including members of the British royal family and other high-ranking nobility. Miss Margaret Whigham, later known as the Duchess of Argyll, was a Scottish socialite and heiress. Her striking features and magnetic personality made her a favorite among the artistic and social circles of her time. Lady Patricia Moore, an Irish aristocrat, was renowned for her beauty and grace. Miss Diane Chamberlain, an English socialite, was known for her poise and sophistication. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of court presentations and social gatherings, providing a window into the opulent and intriguing history of the early 20th century. Though the original painting is lost, these three captivating ladies continue to captivate us with their timeless elegance and charm.
