Sivatherium giganteum, an extinct genus of giraffid beast, is depicted in this stunning chromolithograph illustration by F. John from the "Animals of the Prehistoric World" publication of 1910, published in Hamburg. This magnificent creature, also known as "Shiva's beast," is believed to have lived during the Miocene epoch, around 15 to 11 million years ago. Sivatherium was one of the largest giraffids ever discovered, with estimates suggesting it could reach heights of up to 12 feet at the shoulder and weigh up to 6 tons. The Sivatherium's most distinctive feature was its massive, elongated skull, which housed a pair of large, downward-pointing horns. These horns were likely used for defense against predators and for intraspecific combat. The animal's body was covered in coarse, shaggy fur, and its legs were long and powerful, allowing it to move gracefully through its wooded habitat. Despite its impressive size and unique appearance, Sivatherium is now extinct, with the last known fossils dating back millions of years. The exact cause of its extinction remains a mystery, but it is believed that changing climate conditions and competition with other herbivores may have played a role.
