EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, created by Wilson Lowry for Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature published by Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown in London in 1820, offers a fascinating glimpse into the solar system as it was understood during the Georgian era. The intricate detail and meticulous craftsmanship of this print are evident in the depiction of the sun at the center, surrounded by its planets and asteroids. The inner planets, Mercury and Venus, are shown in their respective orbits closest to the sun. The Earth is depicted as a blue orb with swirling white clouds, representing the known habitable world. Mars, the red planet, follows, with its distinctive reddish hue and polar ice caps. Juno, Pallas, and Ceres, the three known asteroids at the time, are also shown in their orbits between Mars and Jupiter. Jupiter, the largest planet, dominates the outer portion of the solar system, with its prominent Great Red Spot visible. Saturn, with its iconic rings, is depicted further out, followed by Uranus, the Georgian planet, which was only recently discovered in 1781. Vesta, an asteroid located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, completes the lineup. This historical representation of our solar system provides a captivating look into the scientific knowledge and artistic abilities of the time. It serves as a reminder of the ongoing human curiosity and pursuit of understanding the universe around us.
