EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when the Duke and Duchess of Connaught, Prince Arthur and Princess Louise, visited Kimberley, South Africa in 1906. The image was taken on Dutoitspan Road, near the city center, as the royal couple made their way from Bloemfontein to Cape Town. The Triumphal Arch, a grand monument built to commemorate the relief of Kimberley during the Second Boer War, stands proudly in the background. The Duke and Duchess of Connaught's visit to South Africa was significant as they were the first members of the British Royal Family to tour the country since the end of the Boer Wars. Their journey was meant to strengthen the bonds between the British monarchy and the people of South Africa, as well as to promote unity and reconciliation after years of conflict. The Triumphal Arch, completed in 1905, was a symbol of the resilience and determination of the people of Kimberley during the siege of the city in 1899-1900. The arch was designed by the renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker and was funded through public donations. It remains a cherished landmark in the city and a testament to the indomitable spirit of the people of Kimberley. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when royal visits were a grand affair and the Triumphal Arch stood as a symbol of hope and unity in a country that had recently endured great hardships.
