EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius), a vulnerable and enigmatic bird species native to the tropical rainforests of New Guinea and northern Australia. The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Sciences Naturelles: Ornithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Sciences: Ornithology) published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Guyard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Southern Cassowary, also known as the double-wattled cassowary, is the largest of the three extant species of cassowaries. It is characterized by its distinctive helmet-like head shield, wattles, powerful legs, and sharp claws. This bird is an essential component of the rainforest ecosystem, as it plays a crucial role in seed dispersal through its unique feeding behavior. The Southern Cassowary is currently listed as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), primarily due to habitat loss and fragmentation. This beautiful and historically significant engraving serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the natural world and the unique creatures that inhabit it.
