1859 Called Demonstrates Fraud Mediumship Muscles Rapping Simulated Spirit Paranormal

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this intriguing photograph from April 1859, Dr. Schiff of Paris is seen demonstrating how the phenomenon of spirit rapping can be simulated through the use of muscle control in the leg. At the height of the spiritualist movement, spirit rapping, also known as table-turning or planchette writing, was a popular form of mediumship where spirits were believed to communicate through rhythmic tapping or writing on a table or planchette. However, as skepticism towards such phenomena grew, many began to suspect that these occurrences were the result of fraudulent means. Dr. Schiff, a renowned French physician, aimed to prove this theory by demonstrating that the rapping sounds could be produced by the deliberate contraction and relaxation of the leg muscles. In this image, Dr. Schiff is shown with his leg extended and suspended in mid-air, supported by the hands of an assistant. By flexing and extending his leg, he is able to produce the distinct rapping sounds that were commonly associated with spirit communication. This demonstration caused quite a stir in the scientific community, adding fuel to the ongoing debate over the authenticity of spiritualist phenomena. Despite Dr. Schiff's efforts to debunk the spiritualist movement, the belief in communicating with the dead through rapping and other means continued to persist well into the 20th century. Today, this photograph serves as a fascinating reminder of the complex interplay between science, spirituality, and human curiosity that characterized the Victorian era.
