In this vintage photograph, American-born sportsman and polymath Walter Winans (1852-1920) sets an elegant and practical example of what to wear while engaging in the popular pastime of bird shooting in the early 1900s. Dressed in a belted jacket, plus-fours, puttees, and a jaunty Tyrolean hat, Winans exudes the air of a seasoned marksman and outdoor enthusiast. Born in New York City, Winans was a prolific sculptor, author, and historian. He spent much of his adult life in England, where he became a renowned figure in the world of shooting sports. Winans' expertise in the field was recognized with numerous medals and awards, and he wrote several books on the history and techniques of marksmanship. The photograph, taken in 1909, captures Winans in his prime. The belted jacket, a staple of shooting attire, would have provided both insulation and protection against the elements. The plus-fours, a precursor to modern trousers, were designed for comfort and ease of movement in the field. The puttees, which wrap around the legs and secure with a strap, helped to keep the legs warm and prevent chafing.
