EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Stephen Martin Leake: Herald, Garter Principal King of Arms, and Numismatist" Stephen Martin Leake (1702-1773) was a prominent figure in the history of heraldry and numismatics in England during the 18th century. Born in London, Leake began his career as a herald in the College of Arms, eventually rising to the position of Garter Principal King of Arms, the most senior heraldic officer in the English monarchy, in 1748. As a herald, Leake was responsible for granting and registering new coats of arms, as well as maintaining the records of existing ones. He also played a key role in the organization of state ceremonies and processions, ensuring that the correct heraldic insignia were displayed and that the order of precedence was observed. In addition to his heraldic duties, Leake was also an accomplished numismatist, or coin collector and scholar. He was a fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the Numismatic Society, and he published several important works on the history of English coinage. His most notable publication was "A Collection of Engrav'd Portraits of the Kings and Queens of England," which included detailed descriptions of the coins issued during their reigns. Leake's expertise in heraldry and numismatics made him a valuable advisor to successive monarchs, including George II and III. He was also a prolific writer, contributing articles to various scholarly journals and publishing numerous works on heraldic and numismatic topics. This portrait of Stephen Martin Leake, dated from around 1750, shows him in the robes of the Garter Principal King of Arms, with the collar of the Order of the Garter around his neck. The image captures the dignity and authority of this important figure in the history of English heraldry and numismatics.
