EDITORS COMMENTS
This studio photograph captures the moment of camaraderie between two Belgian Non-Commissioned Officers, Pierre Ente and Marcel Blancke, who were patients at the Quex Park Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) Hospital in Birchington, England, during World War I. The photograph was taken at an American studio located at 1 Arcade Steps in Margate. On the reverse side of the print, we find the signatures of both men. Pierre Ente, a caporal in the He. de Ligne regiment, signed the Powell-Cotton Museum visitors book on the 20th of October 1914. Marcel Blancke, a sergeant in the 24e de Ligne regiment, signed it two days later, on the 22nd of October 1914. Both men had also signed the photograph on the front, adding a personal touch to this historical memento. The Quex Park VAD Hospital opened on the 15th of October 1914 and closed on the 31st of January 1919. It was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, and was under the command of Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park, who was also the founder of the Powell-Cotton Museum. These two Belgian soldiers were among the many patients who sought refuge and care at the Quex Park VAD Hospital during the war. Their signatures on the photograph and visitors book serve as a poignant reminder of the shared experiences and connections that were forged during those challenging times.
