Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey - Ottoman Sultan

Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey (1844 - 1918). Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 until his death in 1918, Mehmed - original name Mehmed Resad - spent much of his life in seclusion until the forced abdication of his brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II at the hands of the Young Turks in 1909. A kindly gentle man with an interest in Persian literature, Mehmed was effectively little more than a puppet Sultan whose actions were directed by leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. Mehmed was little able to govern of his own accord and thus accepted direction from Young Turk leaders including Enver Pasha. Date: circa 1910

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey (1844-1918): A Puppet Sovereign in the Twilight of the Ottoman Empire This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic figure of Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey, the last Ottoman Sultan, during his reign from 1909 until his death in 1918. Born as Mehmed Resad, he spent much of his life in seclusion, far removed from the political intrigues and power struggles that characterized the Ottoman Court. The image of Mehmed V Reshad, taken around 1910, reveals a kindly, gentle man with a thoughtful expression and drooping eyes, clad in the traditional Ottoman attire of a red and gold fez and an ornate robe. The sultan's demeanor contrasts sharply with the tumultuous events unfolding around him. Mehmed V Reshad's ascension to the throne came about following the forced abdication of his brother, Sultan Abdul Hamid II, at the hands of the Young Turks in 1909. The Young Turks, a revolutionary political movement, sought to modernize the Ottoman Empire and institute constitutional reforms. Mehmed V Reshad, however, was little more than a puppet Sultan, with his actions being directed by the leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress, including Enver Pasha. Despite his limited role in governing, Mehmed V Reshad maintained a keen interest in Persian literature and was known for his benevolent nature. The Ottoman Empire, however, was in its final days, and the sultan's reign was marked by the gradual dismantling of the once-great empire. This poignant photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the twilight years of the Ottoman Empire and the enigmatic figure of Sultan Mehmed V Reshad, a kind and gentle man who ruled during a time of great upheaval and change.
