Switzerland - Lauterbrunnen, the Staubbach

Coloured lantern slide of a view through the town of Lauterbrunnen. In the background is the Staubbach Falls. The waterfall drops about 300 metres from a hanging valley that ends in overhanging cliffs above the Lutschine River. The stream, on reaching the verge of the rocky walls of the valley, forms a cascade so high that it is almost lost in spray before it reaches the level of the valley. The height of the cascade is between 800 and 900 ft, one of the highest in Europe formed of a single unbroken fall.. Slide number 30 of Box 181 entitled Swiss No.1. Date: circa 1890s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lantern slide depicts the breathtaking view of Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland during the late 1890s. Nestled at the foot of the Alps, the quaint town of Lauterbrunnen is framed by the majestic Staubbach Falls in the background. The falls, one of Europe's highest unbroken waterfalls, plunge about 300 metres from a hanging valley, ending in overhanging cliffs above the Lutschine River. The stream, reaching the edge of the rocky walls, forms a cascade so high that it is almost lost in the spray before it reaches the valley floor. The height of the cascade is estimated to be between 800 and 900 feet, making it one of the highest in Europe. This stunning image, Slide number 30 of Box 181 entitled 'Swiss No.1', transports us back in time to an era of romantic travel and discovery. The vibrant colors and intricate details of the scene are a testament to the artistry of the lantern slide maker, capturing the essence of Switzerland's natural beauty in the late 19th century.
