EDITORS COMMENTS
An Unforgettable Champion: A.F. Wilding's Last Victory Before the Battlefield This evocative Tatler cover photograph captures the essence of a bygone era, featuring New Zealand tennis sensation, Anthony Frederick Wilding. Wilding's dominance on the tennis court is undeniable, with an impressive record of four consecutive Wimbledon Men's Championship titles between 1910 and 1913. The image, taken in 1912, shows Wilding in a relaxed moment with his partner, Mr. Basil Foster, at a private tennis tournament held at Sussex Lodge in Regent's Park. The event brought together many esteemed members of society with the doughty champions of the racket, making for an unforgettable gathering. However, the triumphant days on the court were soon overshadowed by the looming darkness of war. Wilding's championship run came to an end in 1914 when he was defeated by Australian, N.E. Brookes, in three straight sets. Tragically, Wilding's military service during World War I would claim his life. He lost his life near Neuve Chapelle, France, on 9 May 1915, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge. This poignant photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a remarkable athlete whose achievements on the tennis court were eclipsed by the harsh realities of war.
