EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite miniature painting, created by the renowned Spanish artist Alonso de Cartagena in the early 15th century, depicts two significant figures in the Visigothic history of Spain: Theodoric the Great (454-526) and Gesaleico (second half of the 5th century to 510). Theodoric, also known as Theodoric the Ostrogoth, ruled as the King of the Visigoths from 453 to 466 in Italy and later became the King of the Ostrogoths in 474. However, in 489, he was expelled from Italy, and he sought refuge in Spain, where he ruled as the Visigothic King of Hispania from 507 to 510. Gesaleico, on the other hand, was the Visigothic king of Hispania from 484 to 507, preceding Theodoric's reign. The painting also includes Alaric II (died 507), who ruled as the Visigothic king from 484 to 507, between Gesaleico and Theodoric. This genealogical painting is a valuable historical record, illustrating the succession of Visigothic rulers during this period. The painting is housed in the National Library of Spain and is a testament to the artistic talent and historical significance of Alonso de Cartagena. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring the figures to life, making this a captivating piece of art and an essential resource for understanding the Visigothic monarchy in Spain during the late 5th and early 6th centuries.
