EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and danger of the night sky over Thessaloniki, Greece during World War I. In the image, a French destroyer is seen illuminating the German military Zeppelin LZ85 with a powerful searchlight, preparing to take aim and fire a few pot shots in its direction. The LZ85, also known as the Salonika Zeppelin, was a formidable adversary, capable of dropping bombs from the air and causing significant damage and destruction on the ground. On this fateful night in May 1916, the LZ85 had dropped bombs on Thessaloniki, killing three people and injuring a further three. The French destroyer, determined to defend the city, engaged the airship in combat. However, it was ultimately the British battleship Agamemnon that brought down the LZ85 with its anti-aircraft guns on May 5, 1916. The image is a poignant reminder of the brutal and unforgiving nature of the First World War, where the skies above cities like Thessaloniki were a battleground for airships and naval vessels alike. The use of searchlights to illuminate enemy targets was a common tactic during nighttime engagements, allowing gunners to more accurately target their opponents. The French destroyer's determined stance and the ominous glow of the searchlight contrast sharply with the dark, ominous sky, creating a haunting and evocative scene that transports us back in time to the turbulent days of the First World War.
