1858 1946 Arthur Bishop Foley Ingram Titt Winnington 1901

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the revered figure of Bishop Arthur Foley Winnington-Ingram, also known as Tom Titt, during his tenure as the Bishop of London from 1901 to 1939. Born on March 22, 1858, Winnington-Ingram was a prominent Anglican bishop and a leading figure in the Church of England. Winnington-Ingram's episcopate spanned over three decades, making him one of the longest-serving bishops in the history of the Diocese of London. He was known for his pastoral care, social concern, and commitment to the welfare of the poor. During his time as Bishop of London, he oversaw the rebuilding of many churches that were destroyed or damaged during World War I. The photograph was taken in 1946, several years after Winnington-Ingram's retirement in 1939. He continued to be active in church and civic life until his death on January 12, 1946, at the age of 87. The image shows the bishop seated in a study, with a serious expression on his face, wearing his full episcopal robes and holding a staff in his right hand. The photograph offers a glimpse into the solemnity and dignity of the role of a bishop, as well as the wisdom and experience that comes with a long and dedicated service to the church and community. Winnington-Ingram's legacy continues to be celebrated in the Anglican Church and beyond, as a model of faith, leadership, and compassion. This photograph serves as a reminder of his significant contributions to the religious and social fabric of London and the United Kingdom during a time of great change and upheaval.
