In this historic photograph, the Antonov An-225 Mriya, registration number SSSR-82060 (msn 01-01), is seen carrying the Soviet Union's Buran space shuttle piggy-back style at the 1989 Paris Air Show. The An-225 Mriya, meaning "Dream" in Ukrainian, is the world's largest production aircraft, with a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tons and a payload capacity of 250 tons. This colossal aircraft was designed and manufactured by the Antonov Design Bureau in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The Buran space shuttle, a Soviet counterpart to NASA's Space Shuttle program, is visible atop the An-225 Mriya. The Buran was the first reusable spacecraft in the world, and it was designed to carry humans and cargo to low Earth orbit and back. The spacecraft was carried to the launch site atop a Nosecone Energia rocket, but for transport between the manufacturing facility and the launch site, it was carried by the An-225 Mriya. The 1989 Paris Air Show marked the first public appearance of the An-225 Mriya carrying the Buran space shuttle.
