EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the spirit of aviation history at Freedom Park, Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, circa 2000. At the center of the image is the Northrop F-5E Tiger II (74-1571, MSN R.1269), proudly displayed on a pylon. The F-5E Tiger II is a single-engine, twin-seat, all-weather tactical fighter aircraft, developed by Northrop Corporation as an advanced version of the Northrop F-5 Freedom Fighter. Surrounding the F-5E Tiger II are three iconic military aircraft: an F-100D Super Sabre (55-3595), an F-105F Thunderchief (63-8276), and an F-111A Aardvark (67-0100). The F-100D, a single-engine, supersonic fighter aircraft, was the last major variant of the F-100 series, which first entered service in the late 1950s. The F-105F Thunderchief was a twin-engine, supersonic fighter-bomber, known for its powerful engines and impressive performance. The F-111A Aardvark, a variable-geometry wing aircraft, was a versatile multi-role fighter and bomber, which first flew in 1964. The presence of these historic aircraft at Freedom Park serves as a testament to the rich aviation heritage of Nellis Air Force Base and the United States military. The scene is a visual reminder of the evolution of military aviation technology and the important role these aircraft played in defending our nation.
