Torrey & Alexander Mission - Brixton Hall, London

A fantastic, rare view of the Torrey & Alexander Mission - Brixton Hall, Brixton, London. As Brixtons population increased rapidly during the 1870s, some congregations such as Railton Road Methodist Church made use of pre-fabricated corrugated iron chapels until permanent buildings could be provided. The largest example was Torrey and Alexanders temporary mission church (pictured here) on what became the site of Lambeth Town Hall. Date: 1905

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the Torrey & Alexander Mission, also known as Brixton Hall, located in Brixton, London, during the year 1905. At the turn of the 20th century, Brixton's population experienced a significant surge, leading some religious congregations, such as Railton Road Methodist Church, to utilize pre-fabricated corrugated iron chapels as temporary solutions until permanent structures could be constructed. The Torrey & Alexander Mission, depicted in this image, stands out as the most substantial example of these makeshift places of worship. The Torrey & Alexander Mission, with its vast, massive, and hugely impressive corrugated iron exterior, served as a temporary evangelical mission church on the site that later became Lambeth Town Hall. This photograph offers a rare and fascinating glimpse into the religious history of Brixton and the innovative solutions employed by congregations during a time of rapid population growth. The intricately designed corrugated iron structure, with its billboard-like hoardings and ornate detailing, showcases the impressive scale and grandeur of these temporary buildings, which were once an essential part of the religious and community landscape in Brixton. The Torrey & Alexander Mission, with its rich history and architectural significance, remains an intriguing piece of London's religious heritage.
