EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 15th-century illustration by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard, we find ourselves transported back in time to a grand tournament event. Four tournament judges, or "juges d'armes" and a king of arms, or "roi d'armes," are depicted in solemn contemplation, their serious expressions hinting at the weighty responsibility they bear. The judges, dressed in elaborate attire, wear tall hats adorned with plumes and hoods lined with fur. Their doublets, cinched at the waist, are embellished with intricate designs, while their cravats are fastened with elaborate claps. The judges' trousers are tucked into high, laced boots, and they wear spurs on their heels, signifying their readiness to mount a horse at a moment's notice. The king of arms, a more regal figure, wears a chlamys, a cloak with a distinctive fold over one shoulder. His coat of arms, proudly displayed on a parchment, is held aloft, ready to be shown to the combatants. The king of arms' hat is topped with a tall, conical cap, and his hood is lined with ermine fur. This scene offers a glimpse into the grandeur and pageantry of medieval tournaments, where challenges were settled through combat, and honor and chivalry were paramount. The illustration, handcolored and lithographed by Paul Mercuri, and accompanied by text from Camille Bonnard in the book "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," provides a fascinating window into the past. The figures depicted include Barthelemy deyck and René of Anjou, two notable figures of the time. This illustration is a testament to the rich history and fashion of the 15th century.
