This photograph print depicts Empress Dowager Cixi (Tzu Hsi, also known as Hsiao-ch'in or Xiaozhuang), a Chinese royal figure of significant historical importance. Born in 1835, she began her court life as a concubine of Emperor I-chu and later became the mother of Emperor Tsai-tien. In 1875, following the death of Emperor Tongzhi, Cixi assumed the role of regent for her nephew, Tsai-tien, and effectively became a virtual dictator of China, ruling until 1900. Cixi's reign was marked by both domestic and foreign challenges. Domestically, she initiated various reforms aimed at modernizing the Chinese military and education system. However, her rule was also characterized by her suppression of the Hundred Days Reform, a period of liberalization that threatened her power. Internationally, Cixi navigated China through the late Qing Dynasty's interactions with foreign powers, including the infamous Boxer Rebellion, which saw the intervention of eight foreign powers in China. Cixi's diplomatic skills and political acumen allowed China to maintain its sovereignty amidst these challenges.
