This woodblock print, dating between 1870 and 1890, tells the timeless Japanese folktale of Urashima Taro. Urashima Taro was a humble fisherman who lived by the seashore in ancient Japan. One day, as he was mending his fishing nets, he came across a beautiful turtle with a jewel in its crown. Moved by compassion, Urashima saved the turtle from a group of mischievous children who sought to harm it. In gratitude, the turtine-king granted Urashima a wish. He asked to visit the underwater palace, and the turtle granted his request. In this print, Urashima is depicted sitting contentedly on the back of the turtle, as they make their way towards the magnificent underwater palace.
