Varanasi - Swami Bhaskaranandas Samadhi Mandir

Varanasi, India - Swami Bhaskaranandas Samadhi Mandir. Swami Bhaskarananda Saraswati ) was a noted 19th century sannyasin and saint of Varanasi, reputed for his austerity and saintly character. Getting deeply interested in spiritual life when he was only eighteen, he travelled all over India as a wandering monk for many years. But, " even though I practiced such austerities, I gained very little; ignorance and sorrow were as deep as ever. Finally, I sat down here in this garden (close to the Samadhi Mandir pictured on this card) and resolved, May God be realized or may this body die. Now, you see, I get a little abiding bliss." He was reputed to have yogic powers, and forsaw his own death. Date: circa 1910s

EDITORS COMMENTS
Swami Bhaskaranandas Samadhi Mandir, Varanasi, India: A Spiritual Haven in the Sacred City of Varanasi This evocative photograph captures the serene beauty and spiritual significance of Swami Bhaskaranandas Samadhi Mandir, located in the ancient and sacred city of Varanasi, India. The mandir, or temple, is the final resting place of Swami Bhaskarananda Saraswati (1833-1899), a renowned 19th-century sannyasin (renunciant monk) and saint, revered for his austerity and saintly character. Swami Bhaskarananda's spiritual journey began at the tender age of eighteen when he was deeply drawn to the spiritual realm. He spent many years traveling all over India as a wandering monk, seeking enlightenment through rigorous spiritual practices. However, despite his dedication and austere lifestyle, he found little progress in his quest for self-realization. Frustrated and disillusioned, Swami Bhaskarananda resolved to either attain God-realization or to let go of his physical form. He chose the latter and sat down in this very garden, close to the Samadhi Mandir, and surrendered himself to the divine will. Swami Bhaskarananda was reputed to possess yogic powers and was known to have foreseen his own death. The peaceful and tranquil surroundings of the Samadhi Mandir are believed to have played a significant role in his spiritual transformation. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when spirituality was the guiding force in people's lives. The Samadhi Mandir stands as a testament to Swami Bhaskarananda's unwavering dedication to the spiritual path, inspiring generations of seekers to follow in his footsteps.
