Waterloo Medal 1815
Waterloo Medal 1815. One of two medals awarded to Surgeon William Jones. Surgeon Jones served as Regimental Surgeon to the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment in the Peninsular and at Waterloo. The surgeons in Wellington?s Army were barely able to cope with the thousands of casualties after Waterloo. Additional medical officers and civilian volunteers were sent from England to help, even then they were hopelessly overstretched. The Waterloo medal was the first ever ?campaign medal? issued by the British Army, given to every soldier regardless of their rank or role. It was awarded to all soldiers present at the Battle of Waterloo and the actions during the two previous days. Associated with Napoleonic Wars, Waterloo (1815). Date: 1815

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases two Waterloo Medals from 1815, presented to Surgeon William Jones. Jones served valiantly as the Regimental Surgeon for the 40th (2nd Somersetshire) Regiment during the Peninsular War and at the pivotal Battle of Waterloo. The medical corps in Wellington's Army faced an insurmountable challenge in treating the multitude of casualties following the historic battle. With thousands of injured soldiers in need of care, additional medical officers and civilian volunteers were dispatched from England to assist. The Waterloo Medal marked the first instance of a campaign medal being issued by the British Army, recognizing every soldier, regardless of rank or role, who participated in the Battle of Waterloo and the preceding days' actions. This medal, emblematic of the Napoleonic Wars, was awarded to soldiers present at the Battle of Waterloo, symbolizing their bravery and dedication to duty during a time of great need.
