Welsh Cabinet Makers with prams
The shop of W. Davies, a Cabinet Maker and Undertaker, of Station Road, Llanelli who was known as Davies the Celfi (Davies the Furniture). It seems it was common practice for Cabinet Makers to also perform the duty of Undertakers, as it was considered to be an allied trade. The Cabinet Maker would go to the deceaseds house, measure the body, prepare the wooden casket, and then take the body to its final resting place. The items mostly on display in this photograph are a wonderful collection of perambulators of every shape and size. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bustling workshop of W. Davies, a renowned Cabinet Maker and Undertaker, located on Station Road in the Welsh town of Llanelli. Known locally as 'Davies the Celfi' or 'Davies the Furniture,' the business was a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit of the time. The image reveals a fascinating blend of two seemingly disparate trades, as Cabinet Making and Undertaking were often considered allied professions. The Cabinet Maker would visit the deceased's home, measure the body, and create a custom-made wooden casket. Once completed, the Cabinet Maker would then transport the body to its final resting place. The heart of the workshop is dominated by an impressive array of perambulators, or prams, of every shape and size. These intricately designed pushchairs, popular during the late 19th century, were a symbol of affluence and status for many families. The iron and woodwork on display showcase the exceptional craftsmanship of Davies and his team of skilled employees. The shop's interior is filled with a variety of furniture pieces, including a magnificent dresser, bedsteds, and intricately designed drawers. The atmosphere is one of diligent industry, with the hum of machinery and the sound of wood being shaped and sanded. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the past, revealing the interconnected nature of trades and the versatility of skilled craftsmen like W. Davies.
