EDITORS COMMENTS
Willem Ernest van Nassau: A Dutch Soldier and Statesman of the 17th Century This evocative photograph print depicts Willem Ernest van Nassau (1593-1625), a prominent Dutch soldier and statesman of the 17th century. Born in Dillenburg, Germany, Willem Ernest was a member of the powerful House of Nassau, which ruled over various territories in the Dutch Republic and Germany. Willem Ernest's military career began at a young age, and he quickly distinguished himself in the Dutch army. He fought in numerous battles against Spain during the Eighty Years' War, including the Battle of 's-Hertogenbosch in 1622, where he was seriously wounded. Despite his injuries, Willem Ernest continued to serve his country, leading troops in the field until his untimely death in 1625. In addition to his military prowess, Willem Ernest was also an accomplished diplomat and statesman. He served as the governor of the Dutch province of Gelderland and was a member of the States-General of the Dutch Republic. Willem Ernest played a key role in the negotiations that led to the Twelve Years' Truce between the Dutch Republic and Spain in 1648, which brought an end to the Eighty Years' War. This photograph print captures the somber and reflective mood of Willem Ernest's grave, which is located in the New Church in Dillenburg. The inscription on the tomb reads, "Here lies Willem Ernest, Count of Nassau, Prince of Orange, and Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, and Utrecht, who died on 21 August 1625, aged 32 years." The image of Willem Ernest's grave serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by this remarkable Dutch soldier and statesman in the service of his country and the enduring legacy of the House of Nassau.
