EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "William Burkitt, Vicar of Dedham and Biblical Commentator" William Burkitt (1650-1703), depicted in this antique portrait, was a prominent English clergyman and biblical commentator of the late 17th century. Born in Dedham, Essex, Burkitt was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and ordained as a deacon in 1675. He served as the Vicar of Dedham from 1681 until his death in 1703. Burkitt is best known for his extensive work on the Bible, particularly his commentaries on the Old and New Testaments. His scholarship was deeply rooted in the classical learning of his time, and he made significant contributions to the understanding of biblical texts through his meticulous research and clear exposition. Burkitt's commentaries were widely read and highly regarded in both academic and religious circles. His work on the Old Testament, "A Discourse on the Prophecy of Daniel," was published in 1693 and was praised for its thoroughness and clarity. His commentary on the New Testament, "A Discourse on the Gospel of St. Matthew," was published posthumously in 1704. Despite his scholarly pursuits, Burkitt remained deeply committed to his pastoral duties as the Vicar of Dedham. He was known for his pastoral care and his ability to connect with his congregation, and he was deeply respected by the people of Dedham. This portrait of William Burkitt offers a glimpse into the life of a man who dedicated himself to the study and interpretation of the Bible, while also serving as a shepherd to his flock. His work continues to be studied and appreciated by scholars and theologians today, and his legacy as a biblical commentator and Vicar of Dedham endures.
