William Earl Cathcart, 1st Earl Cathcart (1755-1843), was a distinguished British military commander and statesman of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Scotland as William Shaw, he adopted the name Cathcart in 1786 upon inheriting the estates of his cousin, the 3rd Earl Cathcart. This evocative portrait captures the stern and resolute visage of Earl Cathcart, reflecting his formidable reputation as a military leader. Cathcart rose through the ranks of the British Army, serving in the Seven Years' War, the American Revolution, and the Napoleonic Wars. He was a key figure in the Battle of Waterloo, leading the British cavalry charge against the French forces. After retiring from military service, Cathcart entered politics, serving as a Member of Parliament and holding various positions in the British government. He was made a Knight of the Bath in 1782, a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath in 1793, and was created a peer in 1802. He was also a recipient of the Order of the Bath with the Star and Sword in 1815, in recognition of his services at Waterloo.
