EDITORS COMMENTS
William Skinner (1778-1857): A Scottish Churchman and Bishop of Aberdeen This evocative photograph captures the distinguished visage of William Skinner, a prominent Scottish churchman and Bishop of Aberdeen. Born in the village of Auchterless in Aberdeenshire on March 25, 1778, Skinner dedicated his life to the Church of Scotland, rising through its ranks to become one of its most esteemed leaders. Skinner's early education was received at the University of Aberdeen, where he studied theology and divinity. Ordained as a minister in 1802, he served various parishes throughout Aberdeenshire before being appointed as the Provost of Aberdeen in 1826. In 1831, he was consecrated as the Bishop of Aberdeen, a position he held until his retirement in 1857. During his tenure as Bishop, Skinner was a vocal advocate for the welfare of the poor and the education of the working classes. He established a number of schools and charities to help alleviate poverty and improve living conditions in Aberdeen. Skinner was also a strong supporter of the Scottish Reformation and worked to preserve the distinct identity of the Church of Scotland within the broader Anglican communion. This photograph, taken in the mid-19th century, captures Skinner in the later years of his life. His stern yet compassionate expression speaks to his unwavering commitment to his faith and his dedication to the people of Aberdeen. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of a man who dedicated his life to serving his community and upholding the values of the Church of Scotland.
