EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored botanical print showcases the enchanting beauty of Wintersweet, also known as Acokanthera spectabilis or Toxicophlaea spectabilis. Depicted in meticulous detail is this evergreen shrub native to Madagascar and East Africa, with its glossy, oval leaves and clusters of vibrant, tubular flowers. The Wintersweet blooms in late winter and early spring, hence its common name, offering a delightful contrast to the barren landscape during this season. The botanical illustration was drawn and lithographed by the skilled hand of Worthington G. Smith (1835-1917), an architect, engraver, and mycologist. Smith's exceptional artistic abilities are evident in the intricate rendering of the plant's various parts, from its veined leaves to the delicate petals of its flowers. This print was published in Henry Honywood Dombrain's (1818-1905) Floral Magazine in 1872. Dombrain, a clergyman gardener, served as the editor of the Floral Magazine from 1862 to 1873. The publication was renowned for its high-quality botanical illustrations, which showcased the latest discoveries and advancements in the field of horticulture. The Wintersweet, or Bushman's Poison, as it was also known, was believed to have medicinal properties and was used by indigenous peoples for various ailments. However, all parts of the plant are highly toxic and contain cardiac glycosides, making it dangerous if ingested. Despite its poisonous nature, the Wintersweet remains an intriguing and captivating addition to any botanical collection.
