Born into a Protestant Anglo-Irish family in County Louth, Tone's political awakening came during his time at Trinity College Dublin, where he became deeply involved in the cause of Irish independence. In 1791, he founded the Society of United Irishmen, which sought to unite Catholics and Protestants in a campaign for Irish self-rule. Tone's activism led to his arrest and imprisonment in 1793, but he managed to escape and flee to France, where he secured military support for an uprising against British rule. The rebellion, which began in 1798, was ultimately unsuccessful, and Tone was captured and executed. Despite the tragic outcome, Tone's legacy as a visionary leader and champion of Irish independence endures.
