EDITORS COMMENTS
This image presents the Woman of Burgos, a 16th-century Spanish figure, as depicted in a contemporary miniature. The woman is shown wearing a short pink jacket over a long, intricately patterned skirt, and high clogs. The vibrant colors and intricate details of her attire reflect the rich textile traditions of the Spanish Renaissance. The illustration is a handcolored lithograph, created by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard and lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flamenq, and F. Laguillermie. It is taken from Georges Duplessis's "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries), published in Paris in 1867. Duplessis was the curator of the Prints department at the Bibliotheque nationale, and Lechevallier-Chevignard was an artist, book illustrator, and interior designer for many public buildings and churches. He was named professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in 1874. This image is a testament to the artistic and cultural significance of the 16th century in Spain, a time of flourishing textile industries and artistic innovation. The miniature's detailed rendering of the Woman of Burgos's costume provides a glimpse into the rich and varied fashion traditions of the period, and serves as an important historical record. The illustration also showcases the skill and artistry of Lechevallier-Chevignard and the lithographers who brought the image to life, as well as the scholarly contributions of Duplessis in documenting and preserving historical costumes.
