Airforce Coal Fatigue Fuel Hard Labour Manual Months Shovel Shovelling Wraf 1919

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative illustration captures the determination and resilience of two Women's Royal Air Force (WRAF) members during their eight-month tenure in coal fatigue duty during the aftermath of the First World War. The image, titled "Eight Months with the WRAF," depicts the women in uniform, shovelling coal with a focused intensity, their faces set in concentration as they laboriously transfer the fuel into a waiting truck. The WRAF was established in March 1918, initially to provide administrative and clerical support to the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force. However, as the war effort intensified, the roles of these women expanded to include more manual and physically demanding tasks, such as coal handling, to free up men for combat duties. Coal fatigue was a particularly arduous and challenging assignment, as it required long hours in harsh conditions, often in the dark and with limited ventilation. The women were responsible for shovelling coal into trucks, which were then transported to power stations to fuel the generators that provided electricity for the airfields. Despite the challenging nature of the work, the WRAF members carried out their duties with dedication and commitment, contributing significantly to the war effort and paving the way for women's increased participation in the military and the workforce more broadly. This powerful image serves as a testament to their courage and the vital role they played during the First World War.
