1805 Bittersweet Curtis Dulcamara Edwards Lambeth Lectures Nightshade Solanum Sydenham Woody

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving showcases the intricate details of the Woody or Bittersweet Nightshade, Solanum dulcamara. The botanical illustration was created by Sydenham Edwards in 1805 for William Curtis' Lectures on Botany, delivered at the Botanic Garden in Lambeth. Edwards, a prolific artist, produced thousands of botanical plates for both the Curtis Botanical Magazine and his own Botanical Register. The Woody Nightshade, also known as Bittersweet, is a member of the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Its vibrant, winding stems and clusters of small, white to pinkish flowers contrast beautifully with its glossy, dark green leaves. The plant is native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and is now naturalized in many other regions. The Woody Nightshade is an intriguing plant, with a bitter taste that gives it its name. Its berries, while poisonous to some animals, are edible for humans and have been used for medicinal purposes. The plant's attractive appearance, however, belies its potential danger, as all parts of the plant contain solanine, a toxic alkaloid. This historical botanical illustration not only captures the beauty of the Woody Nightshade but also provides a glimpse into the rich history of botanical art. The meticulous attention to detail and the use of handcolouring techniques add depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
