1945 Associated Bert Division Embroidery Essex Malaria Recovering Regiment Shirt Stannard Woollen Made

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures a unique piece of military history: a woollen embroidery on a part of an army shirt from 1945. The shirt, which once belonged to Bert Worne, a soldier in the Essex Regiment of the 3rd Indian Division, also known as the Chindits, was intricately embroidered by Charles Edward Stannard while he was recovering from malaria in the hospital during World War Two. The Chindits were a special long-range penetration force of the British Indian Army, formed in 1942 to operate behind enemy lines in the Far East during World War Two, from 1941 to 1945. Bert Worne was likely a part of one of the many expeditions led by the Chindits, which saw soldiers endure harsh conditions and face significant challenges in their efforts to disrupt Japanese supply lines and weaken their forces. Charles Edward Stannard's embroidery on the army shirt serves as a testament to the resilience and creativity of soldiers during wartime. The intricate design, which is believed to date back to around 1860, adds a personal touch to the uniform and offers a glimpse into the soldier's life beyond the battlefield. The embroidery's association with Bert Worne and the Chindits makes it a valuable historical artifact, shedding light on the experiences of soldiers during the Far East campaign of World War Two.
