WW1 dogs, Keeper Reid with messenger dogs

Keeper Reid with three of his messenger dogs, trained to take messages between trenches and across dangerous stretches of the front line during the First World War. The dog on the left is called Tweed, who was singled out for praise by Reid, as she ran messages between Battalion Headquarters and Transport Lines under heavy shell fire. He was a Highland sheep dog (but clipped for ease of movement) and although sensitive to begin with, was trained to a very high standard. Date: 1914-18

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the indomitable spirit of Keeper Reid and his messenger dogs during the First World War. The image features Reid with three of his highly trained canine companions, who played a crucial role in delivering messages between the trenches and across dangerous stretches of the front line. The dog on the left, named Tweed, is singled out for special mention by Reid. A Highland sheepdog, Tweed was initially sensitive but was trained to an exceptional standard, enabling him to carry out his duties under heavy shell fire. The courage and loyalty of these animals and their handlers were invaluable to the British military during the conflict, and this photograph offers a poignant reminder of their vital role in the history of the 1914-18 war. Keeper Reid and his messenger dogs braved the harsh conditions and unrelenting danger to ensure the smooth flow of communication between the various units and commands, making them unsung heroes of the First World War.
