1943 Alaska Alaskan Aleutian Allied Allies Campaign Craft Forces Invasion Landing Tractors

EDITORS COMMENTS
August 24, 1943: The Re-capture of Kiska, Alaska during World War II In the harsh and unforgiving landscape of Alaska's Aleutian Islands, a pivotal moment in World War II history unfolded. The Island of Kiska, once occupied by Japanese forces since early in the war, was about to be re-captured by the Allied forces of the United States and Canada. The Aleutian Islands campaign, a series of battles for control of the Aleutian Islands, began in June 1942 when Japanese forces invaded Attu and Kiska. The campaign marked the first time American soil was invaded during the war. After a fierce battle on Attu, the Japanese were defeated, leaving Kiska as the last occupied island. On August 14, 1943, a massive amphibious assault was launched against Kiska, with over 14,000 American and Canadian troops involved. The invasion was met with heavy resistance from the Japanese, but the Allies pressed on, determined to reclaim the island. Two weeks later, on August 24, 1943, the American forces declared Kiska secure. The Aleutian Islands campaign was officially over. In the photo, American troops disembark from landing craft, their faces etched with determination and resolve, as they make their way towards the shore. Behind them, a line of tractors waits to transport supplies and equipment. The Japanese forces had retreated, leaving behind a desolate and barren landscape. The re-capture of Kiska was a significant victory for the Allies, a testament to their perseverance and determination in the face of adversity.
