EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the regal presence of Zulu Chief Cetywayo, also known as Cetshwayo or Cetawayo, who ruled the Zulu Kingdom from 1872 to 1879. Born around 1826, Cetywayo ascended to the throne following the death of his father, King Mpande, and faced numerous challenges during his reign, including the encroachment of European settlers and the increasing influence of Christian missionaries. Despite these challenges, Cetywayo led the Zulu nation to a remarkable victory against the British in the Battle of Isandlwana on January 22, 1879. The battle is considered one of the greatest military defeats in British military history, and Cetywayo's strategic prowess and the bravery of his warriors earned him international recognition. However, the Zulu victory was short-lived, as the British regrouped and eventually defeated the Zulu army in the Battle of Ulundi later that same year. Cetywayo was exiled to the Cape Colony, but he was later allowed to return to his homeland in 1882 under British rule. This photograph, taken during Cetywayo's exile, shows him wearing the traditional Zulu regalia, including a leopard skin cloak and a beaded crown. His piercing gaze and strong posture convey a sense of determination and resilience, reflecting the indomitable spirit of the Zulu people and their legendary leader. Cetywayo's legacy continues to inspire the people of South Africa and beyond, as a symbol of Zulu pride and resistance against colonialism. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of the Zulu people and their remarkable leader.
