Curlew Sandpiper Collection

The Curlew Sandpiper (Calidris ferruginea) is a species of small wading bird found in the northern hemisphere, and is a member of the sandpiper family, Charadriiformes, and is closely related to other shorebirds such as plovers and oystercatchers, distinctive long bill which it uses to probe for food in mudflats and shallow waters. Its plumage varies from light brown to grey with dark barring on its wings and back. During migration, it can be seen in large flocks along coastal areas or inland wetlands. The Curlew Sandpiper feeds mainly on insects, crustaceans, molluscs and worms but also takes some plant material such as seeds or leaves when available. It nests in open grassy areas near water bodies where it builds its nest from grasses and sedges lined with feathers or downy material. This species has an extensive range across Europe, Asia, Africa and North America but its population numbers are declining due to habitat loss caused by human activities such as agriculture or urban development.
