Two young mothers back in a Newcastle hospital last night to enjoy a life-saving

Two young mothers back in a Newcastle hospital last night to enjoy a life-saving experience 12 hours long. They were the first patients to use the new four-bed extension to the kidney machine centre at Rye Hill Hospital. Their life will now be regulated by twice - weekly journeys from their home to the centre, where they spend 12 hours talking, sleeping and reading while the artificial kidney filters the impurities from their blood. Mrs Lilliam Murphy, aged 28, of Gainford Road, Billingham amd Mrs Kathleen Chamberlain, aged 25, of Yeoman Street, Redcar, have been waiting for the new unit for more than two months. They have been travelling to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle, for a cruder form of artificial filtering. Their kidneys have ceased to function and they will need regular treatment fot the rest of their lives to avoid being poisoned by body impurities. Staff nurse Ann Wagstaff is seen adjusting the machine.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Life-saving Experience at Rye Hill Hospital: Two Young Mothers Begin a New Chapter". In this print from April 24th, 1967, we witness the joyous moment when two young mothers, Mrs Lilliam Murphy and Mrs Kathleen Chamberlain, step foot into the newly established four-bed extension of the kidney machine center at Rye Hill Hospital in Newcastle. After enduring an agonizing wait of over two months, their prayers have been answered as they become the first patients to benefit from this life-saving facility. Both women suffer from kidney failure and have relied on arduous journeys to the Royal Victoria Infirmary for a less advanced form of artificial filtering. However, with the introduction of this groundbreaking unit at Rye Hill Hospital, their lives are about to change dramatically. Twice-weekly visits will now regulate their existence as they spend twelve hours conversing, dozing off peacefully or engrossed in books while an artificial kidney meticulously filters impurities from their blood. The dedication and expertise of staff nurse Ann Wagstaff shine through in this image as she adjusts one of these miraculous machines. Her compassionate care is undoubtedly instrumental in providing comfort and hope to these brave women during such challenging times. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder that medical advancements can bring immeasurable relief to those suffering from chronic illnesses. The resilience displayed by Mrs Lilliam Murphy and Mrs Kathleen Chamberlain is truly inspiring; they face regular treatments for life but refuse to let it poison their spirits. As we reflect upon this historic moment captured by NCJ's lens, let us celebrate not only scientific progress but also the unwavering strength exhibited by individuals like these remarkable young mothers who continue fighting against all odds for a brighter tomorrow.
