EDITORS COMMENTS
Dame Margot Fonteyn, the iconic British prima ballerina, captured in a timeless moment at London Airport in 1959. With grace and poise radiating from her every movement, this photograph encapsulates the essence of Dame Fonteyn's illustrious career. Born in 1919, she dedicated her life to the art of ballet and became the President of the Royal Academy of Dancing for an astonishing 37 years. Her talent was recognized worldwide when she received a DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in 1956. Having studied under George Concharu in Shanghai before returning to England to train at Sadlers Wells Ballet school, Dame Fonteyn quickly rose through the ranks. By age 43, she formed an unforgettable partnership with Rudolf Nureyev that captivated audiences around the globe. In recognition of her extraordinary contributions to ballet, Dame Margot Fonteyn was bestowed with one of dance's highest honors - Prima Ballerina Assoluta - joining just two others in history who have achieved this prestigious title within Imperial Russian Ballet and its successors. After retiring from performing due to caring for her sick husband until his passing in 1989, Dame Fonteyn found herself living in poverty until a campaign on her behalf restored dignity and support during her final years. This print serves as a testament to Dame Margot Fonteyn's enduring legacy as an unparalleled performer whose elegance continues to inspire generations.
