Fashion 1960s. Cut-price Dior - with balloons. Christian Dior would have turned in his grave had he known of the goings on Tuesday (5-3-68) at the London branch of his famous Paris fashion house. Not only were they launching a range of clothes labelled Diorling - the Dior norm, but showing them off were girls who smiled in a most immodel way. Jolly girls in fact, hanging on to balloons, grinning and sort of jigglaing around: a rather distant cry from the straightfaced models at the staid Dior shows in Paris. Prices for the new Diorling range - 20 guineas will buy a dress, three guineas a scarf or beret - are certainly an attempt to bring a touch of French couture within the reach of the British girls budget. Like the balloons, colours were red, white and navy blue and French sailor pompon hats underlined that here was French fashion, available in England. There were navy and white sailor suits, ruffled white organdie dresses, pinstripe grey flannel trouser suits and " little nothing" jersey dresses. For the price, the fabric and finish are excellent - and the buyer gets the added value of that hidden Dior lable. All in all the new Diorling range, together with the revamped Dior-London collection, are as pretty as the Paris original collection and a lot younger looking. Jolly....in a pompon hat. EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the vibrant world of 1960s fashion with this photo print. The London branch of Christian Dior's iconic Paris fashion house unveils its new range, Diorling, in a playful and unexpected manner. Balloons fill the air as jolly girls, radiating infectious smiles, showcase the collection with a delightful energy that contrasts sharply with the traditional solemnity of Dior shows in Paris. The Diorling range aims to make French couture accessible to British girls on a budget, offering dresses for 20 guineas and scarves or berets for three guineas. The colors are classic - red, white, and navy blue - reminiscent of French sailor style. Pompon hats add an authentic touch to these stylish ensembles available right here in England. From navy and white sailor suits to ruffled organdie dresses and pinstripe trouser suits, each piece exudes elegance at an affordable price point without compromising on fabric quality or finish. And let's not forget the hidden Dior label that adds prestige to every purchase. Alongside the revamped Dior-London collection, these designs capture both beauty and youthfulness while staying true to their Parisian origins. This snapshot from March 1968 encapsulates a moment when high fashion meets joyful celebration – where balloons dance alongside impeccable style.
