"Your tea, madame"says the Lake District constable as he opens up the cells to

" Your tea, madame" says the Lake District constable as he opens up the cells to arouse a holiday maker who had nowhere else to sleep the night. Scenes like this were not uncommon at Kendal, where every holiday makes who could not find accommodation went to the police station looking for help. Those who said they would " sleep anywhere" were fitted up in a cell for the night. They had to leave early next morning, but received apologies of the police for accommodation which was not entirely up to " Grand Hotel" standards. April 1946 P009147

EDITORS COMMENTS
- A Glimpse into Holidaymaker's Plight in Kendal In this print captured in April 1946, we are transported back to a time when holidaymakers faced unexpected challenges while seeking accommodation. The Lake District constable, with a warm smile on his face, opens up the cells at Kendal police station to arouse a weary traveler who had nowhere else to sleep for the night. Scenes like this were not uncommon in Kendal during that era. Every holidaymaker who couldn't secure lodging would turn to the local police station as their last resort. Those brave enough to declare they would "sleep anywhere" were provided with an unconventional solution – spending the night inside one of the cells. Although far from luxurious and lacking the comforts of a grand hotel, these makeshift accommodations offered solace for those stranded souls. As dawn broke early next morning, they bid farewell and received apologies from the kind-hearted police officers for providing lodging that fell short of "Grand Hotel" standards. This snapshot encapsulates both the unusual circumstances faced by holidaymakers and highlights the compassion shown by law enforcement during challenging times. It serves as a reminder of how communities rallied together to help those in need, even if it meant making do with humble alternatives. Preserved through Memory Lane Prints courtesy of Mirrorpix, this photograph offers us an intriguing glimpse into history – reminding us that sometimes even behind bars lies warmth and kindness.
