World War II Home Front: Brother Douglas who is chaplain of the Westminster YMCA Hostel
World War II Home Front: Brother Douglas who is chaplain of the Westminster YMCA Hostel on the site of the old Westminster Hospital. Has on the roof of the hostel some chickens, and small box garden where he grows onions, lettuce, etc. He has one particular chicken called Blondine, a female Blondine, the tight rope walker, because every time it comes on the roof she flies on the rail and waits for him to feed her. There is a huge drop to the ground and once Blondine missed her footing and flew straight down into the roadway. Brother Douglas went and picked her up quite unhurt and two hours later she laid an egg on the roof. This roof is under the shadow of the Abbey. He loves to take the soldiers in the hostel up on the roof and show them Blondines tricks. July 1943 P010156

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment during the tumultuous times of World War II. Brother Douglas, the devoted chaplain of the Westminster YMCA Hostel, is seen tending to his unique rooftop sanctuary amidst the chaos of war. On this old site of Westminster Hospital, he has created a small haven with chickens and a box garden filled with onions and lettuce. Amongst his feathered companions, there is one particular chicken that stands out - Blondine, a female Blondine known as "the tight rope walker". Every time Brother Douglas appears on the roof, she gracefully flies onto the rail in anticipation of being fed. The sight is both amusing and astonishing as Blondine's daring act takes place high above ground level. One fateful day, tragedy strikes when Blondine loses her footing and plummets straight down into the roadway below. However, miraculously unharmed by her fall, she is gently picked up by Brother Douglas who cradles her in his caring hands. Astonishingly resilient, just two hours later she lays an egg on that very same roof where she had taken flight moments before. Underneath the shadow of Westminster Abbey nearby, Brother Douglas finds solace in sharing these remarkable moments with soldiers residing at the hostel. He takes them up to witness Blondine's incredible tricks firsthand - an enchanting display that momentarily transports them away from their wartime worries. In this image lies a testament to friendship amidst conflict and how even in dark times like World War II
