World War II Home Front. Youth group run their own cottage

World War II Home Front. Youth group run their own cottage. A picturesque century old cottage at Hammersmith has been taken over by the Cadby Hall Youth Group. Girls under 18 starting work continue to receive approved education, in their employers time, without loss of pay. In the cottage, housecraft, decorating, dressmaking, cookery, etc, is done by the girls, and at a creche nearby they get to know how to manage babies. Guest days at the cottage make them capable hostesses. L.C.C. teachers are helping in this interesting social and educational experiment. It is still in the formulative stage, but already shows good results, by extending the young peoples range of interests and encouraging them to become useful and responsible citizens. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment from the World War II Home Front. The image showcases a picturesque century-old cottage in Hammersmith, which has been transformed into an empowering space for the Cadby Hall Youth Group. In this unique setting, young girls under 18 are given the opportunity to work while continuing their education without any loss of pay. Within the cottage's walls, these industrious girls engage in various activities such as housecraft, decorating, dressmaking, and cookery. Additionally, they learn essential skills at a nearby creche on how to care for and manage babies. This comprehensive approach aims to equip them with valuable knowledge that extends beyond traditional academic subjects. To support this interesting social and educational experiment, L. C. C. teachers lend their expertise and guidance. Although still in its formulative stage during May 1945 when this photograph was taken (P010161), it is evident that this initiative has already yielded positive results by broadening the young people's range of interests and fostering their development into responsible citizens. The image portrays not only the dedication of these youth but also highlights the resilience and resourcefulness displayed by communities during times of conflict like World War II. It serves as a testament to how even amidst turmoil, individuals come together to create spaces where learning thrives and futures are shaped.
