Pistols at dawn. Mr. John Barnard and Dr. Michael Carson faced each other in the crisp
Pistols at dawn. Mr. John Barnard and Dr. Michael Carson faced each other in the crisp Hertfordshire dawn on Sunday 5th October, ten paces apart and each armed with an antique duelling pistol. Honour was satisfied when Dr. Carson, 53, of Wimpole Street, was seen to be hit and blood welled up from beneath his strangely unmarked shirt for the second time when another volley of shots rang out. Mr. Barnard, 43, had demanded satisfaction some time ago when his wife DianaOs honour was besmirched by the dastardly doctor during a dinner table conversation. The protagonists arrived in horse-drawn coaches, dressed in black capes and top hats. Each had a second and a surgeon and referee were on hand to see fair play done. Dr. CarsonOs devilment brought him additional retribution from a masked lady who also emptied her revenge into his reeling body. Fortunately for all concerened, refreshments were available and the toast was Honour satisfied". Back to back..... The deuellists prepare to shoot it out. October 1980 P004974

Pistols at Dawn - A Duel of Honour
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back in time to witness a dramatic duel between two distinguished gentlemen, Mr. John Barnard and Dr. Michael Carson. As the sun rises over the serene Hertfordshire landscape on Sunday 5th October, tension fills the air as these adversaries face each other ten paces apart. Motivated by his wife Diana's tarnished reputation, Mr. Barnard demanded satisfaction from the dastardly doctor during an ill-fated dinner conversation. Dressed in black capes and top hats, both men arrived in horse-drawn coaches accompanied by their seconds and a surgeon for fair play. The crisp morning air carries a sense of anticipation as antique duelling pistols are raised with steady hands. Shots ring out, echoing through history as honour hangs precariously in the balance. Blood wells up beneath Dr. Carson's unmarked shirt for the second time when another volley is fired. However, fate has more surprises in store for Dr. Carson as a masked lady emerges from the shadows to deliver her own form of retribution upon him. Amidst this intense confrontation lies an intriguing glimpse into society's code of honor and justice during October 1980. The photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also reveals how far individuals were willing to go to defend their honor. As we observe this historic scene unfold before us, let us raise our glasses and toast to "Honour Satisfied" while acknowledging that even amidst such grave circumstances refreshments were available – perhaps offering solace after such tense proceedings.
