EDITORS COMMENTS
In this nostalgic photo print, we witness the end of an era as Florrie Smith, a telephone operator affectionately known as the "Hello" girl, bids farewell to her beloved job at the age of seventy-nine. As technology advances and machines take over, Florrie's connection with the General Post Office is severed when Newick exchange in Sussex goes automatic. A widow who has dedicated decades to her profession, Florrie has been working diligently on the switchboard since 1928. Not only has she been connecting calls but also living on-site and serving as caretaker for the exchange. However, with these changes taking place, she decides it's time to move home. With a heavy heart yet hopeful spirit, Florrie plans to reside nearby with her daughter in this new chapter of her life. She expresses a desire to find an evening job that will keep her engaged and active. This snapshot captures not just one woman bidding adieu to work but symbolizes a larger shift in communication during the 1960s. It serves as a reminder of how far we have come technologically while honoring those like Florrie who played vital roles in connecting people through telephones. As we gaze upon this image from Mirrorpix's Memory Lane Prints collection, let us appreciate both the progress made and cherish those individuals whose dedication shaped our past.
